Fiireplace beams and surrounds form a focal point in a room. To harmonise with other elements in the scheme they can be moulded and carved or left plain depending on the level of decoration required. Similarly, doorways can also be carved and moulded as shown by the example in the photograph. Doorways can be incorporated into a solid timber wall, as with the oak screen shown above. This type of construction is known as 'plank and muntin'. Many original examples survive in ancient buildings and some are decorated with eloborate carvings.
